The Miniature Horse A Timeline
♥Some sources state Minis are related to Icelandics (which date back to the 1st Century AD, however, Icelandics range from 12.3 to 14.3 hands (51" to 59"). ♥16th Century - Reports of Miniature horses in the royal courts of Europe ♥1650 King Louis XIV (The Sun King) kept tiny horses at the Palace at Versailles ♥1765 Paintings and articles in Europe about Miniature Horses ♥1796 A London Magazine published 2 articles about a mare and stallion measuring 30" and 28" imported from Bengal and the East Indies respectively. ♥1800's Falabella of Argentina. Patrick Newell (the great grandfather of Julio Caesar Falabella) first started the breeding of the miniature horses. ♥1800's Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, began a fad as she used miniature horses to pull her carriage around the streets of Paris. ♥1800s Pit Ponies imported from England and Holland to work in Appalachian coal mines. ♥ Late 1800's/Early 1900's 25% of ASPC registered Shetlands were under 38" (36 in the first Stud Book est. 1888 were under 34") ♥1945 1st MInis bred in South Africa by Wynand de Wet ♥1948 First Class for "Midget Ponies" included in the Shetland Congress ♥1967 Smith McCoy had the first Midget Pony sale (reported that none were over 32") ♥1971 The American Miniature Horse Registry a division of the American Shetland Pony Club was formed. ♥1974 Australian Miniature Pony established as it's own breed ( a cross between Shetland ponies and Falabellas) ♥1978 The American Miniature Horse Association established their own breed. ♥1999 The Guide Horse Foundation was established. |
